Each season the SUMB votes on the Section of the Year, in which the SUMB staff recognizes the outstanding work of one section. Last year, the clarinets emerged victorious. Hoping to lead the section to a back-to-back win, here are your clarinet leaders for 2015!

Favorite thing about marching band:
I love that the SUMB gives everyone a chance to be involved even if they have never marched before joining. There is also so many travel
opportunities, and it is really great to be able to travel and perform in front of amazing fans!
Favorite activity outside of band: Spending time with my family and friends
Veteran tip for band camp/school: Enjoy the next four years. It is going to go by in the blink of an eye. Also be open to meeting new people.
You never know who will become your lifelong friend.
What would you do if you won the lottery? Travel around the world
Name: Kelly Gorringe
Major: Music Industry
Hometown: Pipersville, PA
Position: Clarinet section leader
Favorite thing about marching band: Quad shows, Halftime shows, traveling, and all the fun memories made along the way.
Favorite activity outside of band: Talking about band (No, really). Also: reading, netflixing, and having fun spontaneous adventures.
Veteran tip for band camp/school: Some pretty general advice: Get (some) sleep, take care of yourself, keep ontop of your class work, but don’t be afraid to put yourself out there to people and have some fun!
Who’s your celebrity crush? Robert Downey Jr. is on the top of the list.
What fictional world would you most like to live in? The magical world of Harry Potter, at least then I could explain what the function of a rubber duck is! (and magic, duh).
What would be written on your tombstone? “Not appreciating my puns when I was alive was a grave mistake”
Name: John Grout
Hometown: Derry, NH
Position: Clarinet Section Leader
Favorite thing about marching band: The sharp response of Attention followed by the crystal clear sound of silence as the response decays, evaporating away.
Favorite activity outside of band: Swimming
Veteran tip for band camp/school: Always get some water to drink during EVERY break, even if you just had some.
If you could have dinner with any person, living or dead, who would it be? Flavius Petrus Sabbatius Justinianus Augustus, Emperor Justinian the First of the Byzantine Empire
What would you put on your perfect pizza? Wheat crust, basil, mozzarella, pesto, feta, spinach, kalamata olives, diced tomatoes. Mediterranean pizza is love. Mediterranean pizza is life.
What’s your dream job? Author
Name: Jesse Wilhelm
Major: Music Education
Hometown: Baldwinsville, NY
Position: Clarinet Music Instructor
Favorite thing about marching band: It’s like being apart of a giant family, all coming together to do something we love; which is making music ☺
Favorite activity outside of band: camping and baking
Veteran tip for band camp/school: Don’t let your mindset get engrossed over the negative and fear. If you want something, go after it. If you want to join a club or organization, just do it. It might benefit you in the long run. If you want to make new friends, just be yourself and open up to everyone you meet. If you feel that your major is not for you, don’t sit there and cry about it. Do something about it; take new classes that interest you or seek advice. In the end, you’ll be happier off even if you did something that resulted in a mistake. That way you can say, “ok, how can I learn from this?” and not have to wonder “what if..” for the rest of your life.
What are you doing this summer? Saving money to travel through some countries in Europe next summer with friends!! (so working full time 😛 haha)
What super power do you wish you had and why? I always wanted to be able to fly, like tag and hide and go seek were always fun when I was a kid, but I had always want to be able to fly up and hide on rooftops or trees when playing these games like Peter Pan. I also wanted to be like Mary Poppins and fly by using an umbrella. I destroyed like all umbrellas my family had one time because I ran down the giant hill my house is on with them propped open when it was extremely windy out to try to gain leverage to fly.
What would you do if you won the lottery? Well first I would cry because like, holy smokes! I would probably pay off my family’s/ my debts then build my dream home which is a log cabin with a big yard with trees on the shore of a lake (and of course I would have to have a boat, snowmobile and like other cool stuff). Then I would donate the rest to Make A Wish because that’s my favorite foundation, to foundations to end international traffic in slavery, and give grants to schools in need of music programs.
